Discovering the Llémena valley

Framed by the river basin of the Llémena stream, this valley is not very known and thus? one of the natural areas best preserved of the Girona province. It has a surface of 182 square kilometers and it’s situated in part of both the Girona and the Garrotxa provinces. It’s situated on an altitude in between 100 and 500 meters.
Its harmonious landscape has been modelled by nature and the tradicional use of its resources: cliffs, caves, different types of forest, volcanoes, the presence of water with its streams and gorges, hermitages, churches and “masias” (typical catalan countryhouses).

ROUTES

In the valley there are traces of volcanic activity from at least 40.000 years old. Here is a list of the most visited volcanoes in the area:

Some of the main gorges that you can find in the Llémena valley, to have a nice excursion with a splash.

  • “Gorg del diable” (el Pla de Sant Joan)
  • “La font de la Torre” (Canet d’Adri)
  • “Gorg de les bruixes” (Sant Martí de Llémena), at the moment the water is not running, but it is still a nice walk, even if you can’t have a swim at the end.

RESTAURANTS

At the Llémena Valley prevails a countryside cuisine, with broth based stews, products from the vegetable garden, from hunting and farming, as well as cold meat and recipes where mushrooms are one of the main protagonists.  A cuisine that is nurtured from the field and adds to its menu each season’s products.
The most typical dishes are a legacy of centuries of tradition that preserve key ingredients as olive oil, aioli and “sofregit” (stir fried sauce based on onions, garlic and tomatoes). Veal with mushrooms, rabbit, “botifarra de perol” (typical sausage), duck with pears and snails can be highlighted. All of them accompanied by salads and vegetables from the Girona garden. The deserts, typical Catalan, are the “crema catalana” and “mel i mató”.
